A Taco's Tale
A Taco's Tale is a side-scrolling action platforming game. You are Taco, fighting bandits and desperadoes that litter the frontier land of Tex-Mexica. Explore the vast reaches of the frontier, form a posse, find treasure, and rid the land of any outlaws running amok!
Goals
The primary goal for this project was to design UI for a Metroidvania style game. I’m a big fan of the genre, with Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night being two of my favorite games of all time. The scope of the project was to create an environment concept for the HUD, design characters, develop all system menus, and create a gallery of icons including: weapons, skill badges, mapping, equipment, and collectible artifacts.
Process
I had previously worked with a few friends on a Flash game that had a main character who was a taco, and those fond memories led me to work on A Taco’s Tale. I started from the ground up, mostly sketching characters and environments to help inform the design choices for the user interface (Western with Sci-fi elements). I played around with a number of layouts and wireframed a handful that fit well before finalizing them. With menu flow locked in, I leaned into a Western motif and continued to develop the remaining icons.
