Space Cat
Space Cat is an isometric resource collection and exploration game. Our hero Space Cat is a galaxy-trotting explorer, scavenging all the loot to be traded. Journey with Space Cat to explore an exciting plethora of worlds, fending off aliens and other creatures while you find treasure. Help Space Cat upgrade his ship and travel even deeper into uncharted parts of space!
Goals
The main goal for this project was to design a space-inspired exploration game for which I would create a space-themed UI. The scope of the project centered around creating the HUD for level exploration, a bestiary to catalog alien life forms, and an upgrade system for Space Cat to improve his abilities in combat, exploration, and resource collection.
Process
The idea for Space Cat came from some playful doodling. I sat down and sketched for a bit as I kept the theme of space on my mind. After some time sketching, a scenario formed in my head. “What if a cat, who was a deep space miner, had been laid off from his job and decided to try his hand at going into business for himself as a deep space miner?” After that I just ran with the idea and jotted down notes on goals and asset deliverables.
The primary gameplay loop is Space Cat going from planet to planet, gathering resources for collection orders given to him by his business partner. At each planet, Space Cat can explore, discover resources, and interact with different alien species as he collects treasure. I created all the art assets on top of the UI/UX design. Working on this project gave me experience in designing not only UI but also character, creature, and environments.
